Fossil Fuel Addiction: Biggest Issue of Our Time?
AA041872

Fossil Fuel Addiction World Social Issue

Sure the war on drugs or the global economic crisis are big issues, but with the number of ships involved in the BP Gulf oil clean-up starting to get close to the number involved in the Allied invasion of Europe in WW2…the situation certainly makes one start to think! Not that any such endeavors should be considered a total “waste” of time or energy, but perhaps if we started using our future hind-sight perspective today does it not become obvious that such situations that call for such extreme measures should be avoided at nearly any cost?

At a minimum it is worth considering all the lost and wasted opportunities of what could be accomplished if all that energy and manpower were getting to be used for something even more positive and constructive.

According to mental health experts the first step with any problem is to acknowledge that it exists. If true then it would be challenging to find anyone at this point that can step forward and in all honesty say that “there are no issues with using fossil fuels as a main source of energy”. Especially if one keeps in mind that it’s a proven fact that fossil fuel use causes health and environmental damage and that in most cases due to limited local supplies that the clear majority of nations in the world today currently lack energy independence.

In addition any cursory research into world history clearly shows a multitude of previous situations where a lack of energy resources has been instrumental in inciting many conflicts.

Clearly the point of relying on limited natural resources has gone beyond the point of being prudent and it’s time to break our fossil fuel addiction and start living a greener and more sustainable way of life.

One has to feel sick in their stomach upon hearing the latest news about the most recent loss of animal life or jobs in the Gulf, and/or a 20+ billion USD loss over the next several years for the Gulf states tourism industry. All these things are bad sure enough, but there are also other news items lurking under other headlines about world conflict and other environmental disasters, which at least on some level are also connected to fossil fuel need or greed. It all reinforces the point that a change is now required…and those changes should start with the proverbial “man in the mirror” and not wait for a government mandate!
